Area and history

Vestergade, where our microbrewery and restaurant are located, is part of Copenhagen's "old town", and forms the southern boundary of the area known as the "Latin Quarter", where the original buildings of Copenhagen University (now the law and economy departments only) are located.

Vestergade was for a long period the main street leading from the city gates at Vesterport, where the farmers and traders would enter to sell their wares, buy supplies and be entertained while they stayed. The southern side of the street was primarily occupied by traders, while the nothern side was a long line of hostelries offering food and lodging to the arriving travellers.

It was of course the ideal place for cunning city types to "fleece" the unsuspecting folk from the country, and there are many stories of visitors being cheated of everything they owned - even down to their shirtbuttons, as described in one play written in 1723 by Ludvig Holberg.

Amongst Vestergade's best-known inhabitants was the physicist H.C. Ørsted, who lived in Vestergade while studying at the university.

We hope you will drop in to BrewPub København on your way through historic Copenhagen!
